Common Causes of Harley Davidson Gas Tank Dents

Road Hazards

Debris, rocks, or accidental impact while riding can leave unsightly dents in your Harley’s gas tank. While these dents may seem small, they can stand out on your bike’s sleek surface.

Parking Accidents

Even a slight mishap while parking can lead to a noticeable dent in your gas tank. And for Harley Davidson owners, any imperfection on their beloved bike is unacceptable!

Transport Mishaps

If you’ve ever transported your Harley, minor mishandling during loading or unloading could result in an unexpected dent on your gas tank.

How Does Motorcycle Tank Paintless Dent Repair Work?

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) is an innovative technique that involves gently massaging the dented area from behind the panel using specialized tools. This method allows for the dent to be removed without affecting the paintwork.

Assessment of the Damage

– Our experts at MotoPDR begin by evaluating the size, depth, and location of the dent to determine if PDR is the right solution.

Accessing the Dent

– Once approved, and tank received, we gain access to the back of the dent, usually from inside the tank. This is crucial for applying the right pressure.

Gentle Removal Process

– Using specialized PDR tools, we slowly work out the dent without causing any damage to the surrounding paint.

Final Inspection

– After the repair, the gas tank is carefully inspected to ensure the dent has been completely removed and your bike is back to its pristine condition.

About Daniel Gromm – Founder of Dent Dynamics and MotoPDR

In 1993, I began my journey in the Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) industry as a mobile technician, which led to the founding of Dent Dynamics. Early on, I noticed a gap in the market for innovative tool designs, so I launched a PDR tool company to meet that need. By 1994, I had opened my first retail location. However, during those early years, PDR wasn’t widely known by the public, and business started slowly. To keep things running, I offered PDR training to new technicians and sold tools, which provided the extra income needed to support my growing business. Over time, I realized my passion was in tool design, rather than manufacturing. At that point, I was one of the few creating forged flat tools—a more expensive but superior method that produced thinner, stronger tools. Eventually, as more tool companies entered the market, I shifted focus but continued designing tools for the industry.

In 2007, I took on a new challenge by designing the world’s first Motorcycle PDR system, featuring the Tank Vice, a tool designed to hold any make and model of motorcycle gas tank or fender. This system was specifically developed for motorcycle tank repair, and I’m proud to say that all of my tools are made in the USA. Repairing motorcycle tanks is incredibly challenging, even for seasoned PDR veterans, but I enjoy taking on these tough projects. One of the things I’m most passionate about is helping motorcycle owners restore their vintage bikes, preserving a piece of history.

After moving locations a couple of times, I purchased a building in 2007 where my business still resides today. It’s located in a prime spot near a busy mall and right off the freeway, proving that location, location, location really matters. My shop reflects my love for vintage memorabilia, with a 1950s theme incorporating gas, oil, and vending machine collectibles. In the '50s, people had a love affair with their cars—families took Sunday drives just for the joy of it, and service at gas stations was something special. I want to keep that spirit alive in my shop, where great service is always our top priority.

In addition to PDR, I’ve stayed active in the industry. In 2016, I co-hosted the PDR Tool Time podcast, and in 2018, I developed a new product line called Hawg PDR Glue and Hawg Tabs specifically for motorcycles.

While Santa Rosa, California, doesn’t see much hail, our main focus has been on large dents, door dings, and of course, motorcycle tank and fender repairs. At Dent Dynamics and MotoPDR, we’re dedicated to providing exceptional service and quality craftsmanship, no matter the project.
